Whosoever

There is no word in the spiritual vocabulary that holds a sweeter place in the experience of the believer than this word "whosoever" here in this verse. Another time our Lord used it in a passage that must be known to millions and millions. It is the only verse in the Bible that many people know, and yet it is sufficient to take a man out of death and into life. For our Lord said to the Jewish leader who came to Him by night, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16).

Preaching Through Ruth

In the month of November I will be preaching through the book of Ruth. I love this little book nestled between Judges and 1 Samuel. Between those two books, which record such large accounts of prophets, kings, and conquests, Ruth tells the story of a little family struggling to survive. In Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz we learn of loss, loyalty, and hope restored. In the process, this little story paints a big portrait of God; of his mysterious providence and gracious redemption.

The Parable of the Three Sons

Not long after I was converted, many would tell me how my life was a beautiful picture of what Jesus had spoken about in the parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-31). It wasn't until years later that I came to understand that the parable of the prodigal son wasn't merely the parable of the prodigal son it was also the parable of the prodigal sons. Both sons in the story were spiritually far from the Father. One of them repented and came home to God. The other was inwardly rebellious--thinking that he deserved the blessings of the Father. He was in the home, but his heart was in the far country of self-righteousness. Still, more years passed before I came to understand that the parable is, in its truest and fullest sense, more profoundly rich in it's purpose--it is, in fact, the parable of the three sons.

I am the prodigal son. I ran as far and as fast away from my heavenly Father as I could until He, by His utterly undeserved and lavish grace, drew me back to Himself.

The Lion Who Is the Lamb -- Part Five

The Lion Who Is the Lamb
Revelation 5:1-8
Theme: Triumph through suffering.
This week’s lessons teach us that Christ is the only one who can implement the eternal plan of God in history.

Lesson

This Lamb, looking weak, standing as it had been slain, a crucified Messiah, is the omnipotent King of kings and Lord of lords. And moreover, secondly, Jesus is omniscient - all-knowing - because that's what the eyes refer to. The background here is Zechariah 4:10. It speaks of the seven lamps of the menorah as the eyes of the Lord. Here John identifies the eyes with the seven spirits of God. We came across it earlier in chapter 1 - seven spirits. In Revelation, strictly speaking, John never refers to the Holy Spirit. He refers, rather, to the seven spirits. So the best way of understanding this reference is to think of the multifaceted or omnipresent nature of the Holy Spirit. That is a bit uncertain, but if that's what it means, it certainly fits here because it's a way of saying that Jesus, by his Spirit, is ranging throughout the entire earth and knows all things.

Who are His Brethren?

"Who is My mother?" It is as though He said: "Forget these earthly relationships. In the moment of My death I will commit you to the care of John, that your old age may know no want, but now there are spiritual lessons to be taught." We must not forget that the only time in the Bible that Mary ever asked anything of the Lord Jesus she was met with a rebuke. Now, for the great spiritual purposes involved in the change of dispensations, the Lord disowned the human relationship. "And He stretched forth His hand toward His disciples and said, Behold My mother and My brethren!"

"There came then His brethren and His mother, and, standing without, sent unto Him, calling Him. . ." (Mark 3:31).

The Lion Who Is the Lamb -- Part Four

The Lion Who Is the Lamb
Revelation 5:1-8
Theme: Triumph through suffering.
This week’s lessons teach us that Christ is the only one who can implement the eternal plan of God in history.

Lesson

Then in Exodus comes the Passover. A lamb was killed, the blood was spread upon the doorpost of the house, and God, as he came through to pronounce judgment on the firstborn of all the hosts of Egypt, passed over the houses of those where the blood was spread. It shows that the blood of an innocent substitute is a covering for sin.

Lord or Lunatic

There is no more pitiful scene in all the Bible than this one where Mary, the mother of Jesus, and her later sons came to the scene where the Lord Jesus was at work and tried to draw Him away from His task, even going so far as to think that He was crazy. There are many words in the languages of earth to express the idea of insanity, and it is interesting to note that such an authority as Roget gives only twenty–five words and phrases to describe sanity, but that he lists more than one hundred to describe insanity. While some of these are very picturesque in their description of the poor unfortunates who have lost their minds, there is none more interesting than this phrase used in the Bible to voice the thought of the friends and family of the Lord Jesus. They said, "He is beside Himself" (Mark 3:21). There was a doubleness of personality in this man that opened Him to the charge of demon possession on the one side and lunacy on the other. Poor humanity! How far we all are from God by reason of our sin, and how we need the illumination of the Holy Spirit that we may understand spiritual matters.

Today, we are living in the midst of one of the great transformations in Christian faith. What is changing is not, of course, its truth. What is changing is where this faith is living. For much of the last thousand years, it has found a home in Europe. Today, this is no longer the case.

This article is Part 1 of a 5-part series. Read Part 2 here.

The Lion Who Is the Lamb -- Part Three

The Lion Who Is the Lamb
Revelation 5:1-8
Theme: Triumph through suffering.
This week’s lessons teach us that Christ is the only one who can implement the eternal plan of God in history.

Lesson

The angel asked, "Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?" No creature in heaven or earth came forward, but when John wept, an elder said to him, "Do not weep. See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals." In chapter 4 God alone is called worthy to receive the praise of creation. Here in chapter 5 we find that Jesus, the Son of God, is worthy as well.
