Tuesday: Why Sacrifices?

Sermon: Christ Fulfills the Scriptures

Scripture: Matthew 5:17

In this week’s lessons, we learn what it means that Jesus fulfilled what was written in the law and the prophets.

Theme: Why Sacrifices?

Someone will object, however, "But doesn't the Bible say that God does not desire sacrifices? Doesn't Hebrews 10:4 say that ‘It is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins’? And doesn't Psalm 40:6 say, ‘Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire... burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required’?” Yes, it does. “Well, then, how is it possible that these verses exist along with all of the other verses that speak of the need for sacrifices in the terms that you have given to it?"

Monday: Christ and the Law

Sermon: Christ Fulfills the Scriptures

Scripture: Matthew 5:17

In this week’s lessons, we learn what it means that Jesus fulfilled what was written in the law and the prophets.

Theme: Christ and the Law

The first great public utterance of the Lord Jesus Christ on Scripture not only set forth its complete authority, as we saw last week. It also contained the categorical statement that the Scriptures were to be fulfilled in their entirety by him. Jesus said, "Think not that I am come to destroy the law or the prophets; I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no way pass from the law, till all be fulfilled" (Matt. 5:17-18). We are now to ask: In what sense did Jesus fulfill the law and in what sense did he fulfill the prophets?

Friday: Allegiance to Scripture

Sermon: Christ and the Scriptures

Scripture: Matthew 5:17-20

In this week’s lessons, we see what Jesus’ view of Scripture was and how he used it in his ministry.

Theme: Allegiance to Scripture

When we sum it all up, we find that Jesus Christ believed Scripture, that he submitted himself to Scripture, and that he taught that a person would only believe on him as he believed Scripture. Therefore, we are left with the question: How can we profess to be followers of Jesus Christ and not hold to the same view of Scripture as he did?

Thursday: Fulfillment of Scripture

Sermon: Christ and the Scriptures

Scripture: Matthew 5:17-20

In this week’s lessons, we see what Jesus’ view of Scripture was and how he used it in his ministry.

Theme: Fulfillment of Scripture

Sometime later in the early months of the ministry we find disciples of John the Baptist coming to Jesus with John's question, "Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?" (Matt. 11:3). Jesus answers by a second reference to this same section of Isaiah's prophecy. He told them to look at Isaiah and read what he foretold about the Messiah, and then see if he is fulfilling it. In other words, Jesus challenged other people to evaluate his ministry in the light of God's Word.

Wednesday: Christ’s Use of Scripture

Sermon: Christ and the Scriptures

Scripture: Matthew 5:17-20

In this week’s lessons, we see what Jesus’ view of Scripture was and how he used it in his ministry.

Theme: Christ’s Use of Scripture

Furthermore, Jesus went on to teach that not only is Scripture absolute, and not only is every part of it absolute, but that he had come to fulfill it. This means that Scripture finds its fullest meaning in him. It is by him, for him, and about him—and it is an enigma unless the one who reads it sees the Lord Jesus Christ at its core.

Tuesday: Absolute Authority

Sermon: Christ and the Scriptures

Scripture: Matthew 5:17-20

In this week’s lessons, we see what Jesus’ view of Scripture was and how he used it in his ministry.

Theme: Absolute Authority

The first truth that we find in these verses is the truth that the Scriptures—and of course Christ was referring to the whole of the Old Testament—are absolute. They are eternal and unchangeable. They are the rock upon which the Christian can build. They stand written beyond any alteration or recall. They are the supreme court of all supreme courts. From their verdict there is no further appeal.

Monday: Jesus and the Bible

Sermon: Christ and the Scriptures

Scripture: Matthew 5:17-20

In this week’s lessons, we see what Jesus’ view of Scripture was and how he used it in his ministry.

Theme: Jesus and the Bible

According to these verses Jesus taught that he did not come to supplant the Scriptures or to oppose them. He came to fulfill them and to fulfill them precisely. In later studies we will look at the specific ways in which Jesus Christ did fulfill the Scriptures. Today we want to look in a general way at the truths he taught about them.

Friday: Walk in the Light

Sermon: Light of the World

Scripture: Matthew 5:14-16

In this week’s lessons we learn that as Jesus is the light of the world, so he calls us to be lights as well.

Theme: Walk in the Light

Moreover, when you act as the light of the world, as Jesus said we are, you will also find that the light of Christ will lead you on in love, grace, and righteousness and will keep you from falling as you move along the dark and treacherous paths of this world.

Thursday: Turning Toward the Light

Sermon: Light of the World

Scripture: Matthew 5:14-16

In this week’s lessons we learn that as Jesus is the light of the world, so he calls us to be lights as well.

Theme: Turning Toward the Light

Do men see Jesus Christ in you? They will not find him in the world—in the world's literature, culture, or pastimes. They will only find him as you look to Jesus, as you spend time with him, and thereby allow some of his light to be reflected from your life to those about you.

Wednesday: "Ye Are the Light"

Sermon: Light of the World

Scripture: Matthew 5:14-16

In this week’s lessons we learn that as Jesus is the light of the world, so he calls us to be lights as well.

Theme: “Ye Are the Light”

As I have studied this theme throughout the Bible I have been impressed by the fact that most of the images used to convey it make this point clearly. For instance, in the verses from the Sermon on the Mount that we are studying the Christian is described as a lamp or a candle. He gives forth light. But he does so only because he has first been kindled by Jesus Christ. In the same way, in John's Gospel John the Baptist is described as “a burning and a shining lamp” by Jesus. Again, the point is that John's light is secondary to that of Christ; John's is a kindled light and exists only because of him.
