That Time I Was the Only Woman in the Worship Service

On my experience speaking at a Presbytery meeting on equipping women in the church.

That time was yesterday. I was invited to the PCA Potomac Presbytery to speak to about 70 men on the topic of equipping women in the church. This is an opportunity that I was pleased to accept. It’s one that I have written a lot about.  But I was also a bit nervous.
 
The Presbytery opened with worship at 10:00. I was to speak at 11:15, after the worship service, and then was invited to stay for lunch.

We might expect, since the wicked man has been described in terms of his associations, that the godly man will now be described in terms of his associations too, that is, as a person who associates with the godly. But that is not the case. Instead, he is described as one whose "delight is in the law of the Lord" on which "he meditates day and night" (v. 2).

In fact, in Hebrew the word is actually a plural, which denotes either a multiplicity of blessings or an intensification of them.

What should you do when your pastor sins?

 

It sounds obvious I’m sure to say that your pastor sins. The Scriptures demand such recognition after all. And certainly experience confirms that no pastor has escaped the curse of original sin.

The Reformation was a resuscitation of faithful doctrine and the reshaping of the worship practices of local churches. Reformation theology led to reformed doxology.

You've heard that those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it. Fair enough. But in light of the 500th year celebration of the Reformation, those who don’t know history are doomed to under-appreciate it. We should celebrate and rejoice in the rediscovery of, as Ray Ortlund says, "the gospel doctrine"—but let’s remember the revival of a gospel-centered worship culture in the Reformation. The Reformation was a resuscitation of faithful doctrine and the reshaping of the worship practices of local churches.

Those who know literature a bit more thoroughly are aware that the idea of paths diverging in a wood is found in Dante Alighieri, the Florentine poet of the Middle Ages, whose Divine Comedy begins:

     where the right road was wholly lost and gone.

You’ll recall that not long after this when the early apostles were put on trial by this very Sanhedrin that condemned Jesus, they stood the test because they said that God is sovereign. They knew that God was sovereign in the crucifixion of Jesus, and that he had demonstrated it by the resurrection of the dead. Therefore, he who was sovereign in the affairs of the life of their Master was sovereign in their affairs, too. Since God is sovereign they could trust God for the working out of the details.

A review of a guided tour through the forest of enGendered: God's Gift of Gender Difference in Relationship

I’ve heard good things about Sam Andreades' book engendered: God’s Gift of Gender Differences in Relationship and was excited to read it for myself. Andreades is modest but thorough in building his case that “ the issues of homosexuality and whether women and men should behave differently are cut of the same cloth: the role of gender in relationships” (9). I do think that he is on to something there, and Andreades makes some significant contributions to the way we talk and think about gender. I was particularly on board when reading part one.

I suppose there are a lot of lessons at that point, but one obvious lesson is that we cannot stand in the great crises of life successfully and do the right thing apart from the help of God himself. You see, Pilate had everything going for him.

You see, Pilate had everything going for him. He was the governor, after all. He had the legions of Roman soldiers at his call to do what he wanted. If he decided that Jesus was innocent and had had the courage to stand by that, why, nobody could have touched Jesus. He could have kept him from any harm. Besides all this, he was even warned, and yet he failed.
