Not many of us will have the privilege and the opportunity in our lives to write out an entire systematic theology. However, because the Christian life is built on doctrine (starting with the confession that Jesus Christ is Lord), we all have need and use to understand the whole counsel of God, a systematic theology. Nowhere is the need for systematic theology often lacking in our day then in the preparation and writing of a sermon.

Trustees Wanted

God is looking for more Gospel trustees, for those who will do this reliably and courageously. He’s looking for knowledgeable, discerning, trustworthy men and women. He said, “O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you.” but you can substitute your own name and challenge yourself as to this great calling in life.

A local millionaire is leaving on a round-the-world yacht race and he’s looking for trustees to manage his estate for a year while he’s sailing the seven seas. “Trustees Wanted” says the headline of his advertisement in the local newspaper. Read some of the smaller print and you’ll discover he’s simply looking for trustworthy people to look after his property and valuables and hand them back to him in a year in the same condition as they received them.

The Longest Day - Part Five

THEME: Faith in Action

This week’s lessons remind us of the unlimited power and ability of God to work for the good of all those who trust in him.

SCRIPTURE:
Joshua 10:1-15

The second lesson is that we ought to expect great days of victory in our service of God. We don't see them every day. There ought to be periods of great victory in our lives where, because God has given us a task to do and we believe that He’s going to be faithful to us in helping us accomplish that task, we really can call out for Him for powerful action and expect to see that powerful action bringing about victory in the battles we face in our own lives. I recognize that we can presume upon God at that point. We can call upon Him to do things that God has never promised to do and won't do. At the same time, we also often fail to simply seize upon the promises He has already given.

The Powers of God

The Greek language is very strong when used to speak of the power of God. Our English word “power” translates several different words from the Greek text of the New Testament. There is the word dunamis from which we get “dynamo” and “dynamite”; it is a word that means “explosive power”. This is the word used by Paul in the great verse: “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek” (Romans 1:16).

The Power of God

“I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life” (1 John 5:13).

The Longest Day - Part Four

THEME: Worshipping a Big God

This week’s lessons remind us of the unlimited power and ability of God to work for the good of all those who trust in him.

SCRIPTURE:
Joshua 10:1-15

I don’t think these words are poetical. I think they refer to a real event. I don't know whether God actually stopped the sun and the moon, though He could have. I incline to the view that the impression is that this is what happened, that the day was longer, that light prevailed for a long period of time by some means that we don't know. But I confess I really don’t understand what God did. This passage is not given to us, of course, to cause us to speculate on the nature of the miracle. Rather, it’s given as Paul said when he wrote to young Timothy, as all Scripture is given, for our instruction, our rebuke, our correction, and our training in righteousness. Because that is the case, when we look at a passage like this as a whole, we ask what we can learn from it.

On Headship and Households

Does male headship extend outside of the church and home? Is our manhood and womanhood bound up in headship? The air is getting thick.

Denny Burk says he would like to see more discussion on how the “headship norm” established in Genesis 2 as a “creation norm” informs one’s view on maleness and femaleness. In his response to the questions and challenges we at MoS have raised to some of the popular teachings within complementarianism , Burk says:

To be fair, I think complementarians have a lot of work to do in this area.

Stretching Yourself on God

When John G. Paton landed in the New Hebrides to begin his mission work, he faced an enormous task. The language had never been written – he had to listen to the speech of the natives and write down in his notebook the sounds that he heard them speak.

“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

Why do so many professing Christians think that following Christ is about their personal happiness and success? Perhaps ... these professors no longer endure sound teaching and have itching ears and so accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions (2 Tim 4:3) Why do professing Christians think that Christ has nothing to say about politics and government? Perhaps they do not understand the mediatorial reign of Christ, His supremacy over all things in heaven and on earth.  Why do books like “THE SHACK” and “THE HARBINGER” mislead and hold believers in bondage?

Either/or?

My mother, the exception to the new rule?

Over at his blog, Douglas Wilson has an interesting post on why Christian women are prettier.  I was particularly struck by this paragraph:

Heir of All Things

In all of the New Testament, no book gives us so many descriptions of the Person and work of Jesus as does the book of Hebrews...While all these descriptions are pregnant with spiritual riches upon which our souls may lay hold, there is one title in Hebrews that captures the essence of the Person and work of Christ. In short, He is "the Heir of all things" (Heb. 1:2).
