Tuesday: The Gifts of Faith

Theme: Royalty and Holiness

In this week’s lessons, we look at the three gifts brought to Jesus by the wise men.

Scripture: Matthew 2:1-2

It's often been pointed out by commentators that when the wise men brought gold to Jesus, it was actually being used by God to provide the funds necessary for Joseph to take the young child and his mother to Egypt to escape Herod's attempt on his life. This is probably true, but although it is true, it is overshadowed by the significance of the gift itself. Jesus Christ was a king. The wise men knew this, and hence their gift of gold pointed to his kingship.

Monday: The Gifts of Faith

Theme: Three Great Gifts

In this week’s lessons, we look at the three gifts brought to Jesus by the wise men.

Scripture: Matthew 2:1-2

In the second chapter of Matthew, we read that some time after the birth of Jesus Christ, perhaps as much as two years after the event, wise men came from the east to worship him. This simple story has always figured largely in most celebrations of Christmas, both in this and in other countries, because it's an event upon which the imagination may easily take hold. It has been used widely, both in literature and in art.

Friday: Everybody, Praise the LORD

Theme: Who Is to Praise the LORD

In this week’s lessons, we learn how this last psalm teaches and exhorts everyone, everywhere to praise the LORD.

Scripture: Psalm 150:1-6

The final answer that Psalm 150 gives to the questions you or I might have about worship is to tell us who should praise God. The answer is as comprehensive as those that have been given to each of the other questions we might have been asking.

Thursday: Everybody, Praise the LORD

Theme: God-Centered and Mind-Engaging

In this week’s lessons, we learn how this last psalm teaches and exhorts everyone, everywhere to praise the LORD.

Scripture: Psalm 150:1-6

In yesterday's study we looked at those churches that forbid the use of instruments in worship. But there is another side to this controversy as well. We look at that side in today's study.

Wednesday: Everybody, Praise the LORD

Theme: How to Praise the LORD

In this week’s lessons, we learn how this last psalm teaches and exhorts everyone, everywhere to praise the LORD.

Scripture: Psalm 150:1-6

What an obvious flow of thought this final psalm has! After telling us where to praise God (in v. 1) and reminding us why we should praise him (in v. 2), the next three verses, exactly one-half of the psalm, tell us how God should be praised (vv. 3-5).

Tuesday: Everybody, Praise the LORD

Theme: Where We Should Praise the LORD

In this week’s lessons, we learn how this last psalm teaches and exhorts everyone, everywhere to praise the LORD.

Scripture: Psalm 150:1-6

Where should this be done? Where should "everything that has breath” praise God? The first verse gives us a comprehensive answer. It is “in his sanctuary" and “in his mighty heavens.”

Monday: Everybody, Praise the LORD

Theme: Worship as an “Appetite for God”

In this week’s lessons, we learn how this last psalm teaches and exhorts everyone, everywhere to praise the LORD.

Scripture: Psalm 150:1-6

It is time to make noise, praise-noise for God. Not all worship should be noisy, of course. There are psalms of lament that call for heart-rending sorrow by God's people. Other psalms call for quiet reflection on the acts of God in history, acts that are sometimes puzzling and even incomprehensible to us. But there are times for celebration too. When David brought the ark to Jerusalem, to the place he had prepared for it, the arrival of the ark was announced by trumpets and David danced with abandon before God (2 Sam. 6:14, 15). When the people praised God for the completion of the building of the walls of Jerusalem in Nehemiah's day, the sound of trumpets, cymbals, harps, lyres and singing was so loud that “the sound of rejoicing in Jerusalem could be heard far away” (Neh. 12:43; see vv. 27-44).

Friday: Praise the LORD with a New Song

Theme: New Songs on Earth and a New Song in Heaven

In this week’s lessons, we see the importance of song in worship.

Scripture: Psalm 149:1-9

We love the old songs, of course, just as we love the old doctrines (Jer. 6:16). But each generation has fresh lessons of God's grace, and new experiences of God's grace call for new songs. Israel had experienced God's goodness in bringing the people back to their homeland and (probably) giving them a military victory. So they composed this psalm.

Thursday: Praise the LORD with a New Song

Theme: Victory in Spiritual Warfare

In this week’s lessons, we see the importance of song in worship.

Scripture: Psalm 149:1-9

In yesterday’s study, I concluded with the point that while Christians can serve as soldiers, they are not to try to advance the work of God by killing its enemies.

Wednesday: Praise the LORD with a New Song

Theme: Singing of God as King and Savior

In this week’s lessons, we see the importance of song in worship.

Scripture: Psalm 149:1-9

The second truth about God that was a delight to the psalmist is that God is our King.

The peoples of this world are hostile to God's rule. But they need to be taught that God is King in spite of their rejection of him, since it is only in this way that people can begin to understand that sin is rebellion against God and begin to realize how serious sin is. The people who must teach them this are those who have accepted God's rule and praise him as King, which is what the writer of Psalm 149 does.
