A Prototype for Contemporary Women's Ministries?

The Bigger Story Behind the Transformation of Women's Ministries

I was pleased to see Kate Shellnutt’s article for Christianity Today that calls for churches to look at what’s behind the Jen Hatmaker phenomenon. In it, she discusses the bigger story of transformation of women’s ministries. Finally, this is being addressed more! I certainly follow what Shellnutt meant and demonstrated by this.

Jesus and the Canaanite Woman, Day 3

Theme: Everyone Must Come to Jesus

In this week’s lessons we come to a story where Jesus at first behaves in ways that are not his usual approach with people, but which is intentional to show the expansiveness of the grace of God, and the need for saving faith.

Scripture: Matthew 15:21-28

In the latter part of the discussion about clean and unclean things from Matthew 15, Jesus went on to say that these Pharisees think that the way you get defiled is by touching things

In the latter part of the discussion about clean and unclean things from Matthew 15, Jesus went on to say that these Pharisees think that the way you get defiled is by touching things or by eating things. It’s not what you eat or what you touch that makes you dirty. What makes you dirty is your heart, because the thing that defiles a man or a woman is what comes out and not what goes in.

Jesus and the Canaanite Woman, Day 2

Yesterday we mentioned one way Jesus’ reaction to the woman has been understood.
Yesterday we mentioned one way Jesus’ reaction to the woman has been understood.  Today we consider two other approaches.

Other people have suggested, and I think with a great deal more weight, that Jesus was testing the woman or trying to strengthen her faith. There’s something to that. You have this progressive reaction to the woman. First he says nothing at all, then, he tells her that he was sent to Israel first of all, and then finally he adds the reference to dogs—drawing her on, you see, seeing how strong her faith is. Any Gentile was well aware of what the Jews thought of him or her. They knew that they were dogs in the eyes of the Jews.

A reminder to the tone police

A service for those who don't remember...

We continue to hear that the most notable feature of the Trinity debate which touched off this summer is the "unfortunate tone" of the meanies here at MOS.

Love Warrior

On Glennon Doyle Melton's new book, the Belong Tour, and the New Christian Women

This review is a little different for me. I’m torn. I’m frustrated. I’m wondering how in the world things will progress for evangelical women.

Jesus and the Canaanite Woman, Day 1

Theme: Jesus’ Puzzling Approach

In this week’s lessons we come to a story where Jesus at first behaves in ways that are not his usual approach with people, but which is intentional to show the expansiveness of the grace of God, and the need for saving faith.

The next encounter of Jesus we are studying is with the Canaanite woman. Jesus is in the region of Tyre and Sidon, a Gentile area of the country.

The next encounter of Jesus we are studying is with the Canaanite woman. Jesus is in the region of Tyre and Sidon, a Gentile area of the country. It’s significant to note at the very beginning that this is the only time in his entire life that he left Jewish territory for a Gentile land. Now that in itself doesn’t surprise us, but it does underscore an important theme in Matthew’s Gospel.

A Heart Set Free: A Journey to Hope Through the Psalms of Lament

Review of A Heart Set Free, by Christina Fox

Women sometimes get the message that they are always supposed to be smiling and happy. After all, the Bible does tell all Christians that we are to rejoice in the Lord always (Phil. 4:4) and to count it all joy when we meet trials (James 1:2). We see that the fruits of the Spirit are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, and faithfulness (Gal. 5:22). But what if you struggle with depression? What if you are groaning within over a trial? Are Christians allowed to express these kinds of emotions?

Jesus and the Five Thousand, Scene 5

Theme: The Priority of Evangelism

In this week’s lessons we see how Jesus was teaching his disciples to minister to the needs of others, and that our own service needs to follow in this way.

Scripture: Matthew 14:13-21

The fourth lesson we learn is that although we are inadequate and Jesus is adequate, nevertheless, we are to be a bridge between himself and other people. And you see that’s the point with which we began. Jesus chooses to use us as his coworkers.

The fourth lesson we learn is that although we are inadequate and Jesus is adequate, nevertheless, we are to be a bridge between himself and other people. And you see that’s the point with which we began. Jesus chooses to use us as his coworkers. I marvel at the way he does that in the story: He calls the disciples to him, takes what they have, multiplies it, gives it back, and they distribute it. And then at the end they’re gathering it up, no doubt in order to have it later to give out to other people. You see, although they have nothing in themselves, nevertheless they are the bridge between the Master and the masses.

If you think a vote is a sin, then have the courage to treat it as such

Pastors need to be very careful with the rhetoric they use about voting choices.

It's been interesting seeing some of the sharp rhetoric being used about Christian voting over the last few weeks, rhetoric that has if anything become more extreme in the last twenty-four hours.
