Jesus and the Paralyzed Man, Part 1

Theme: Reactions to Jesus

This week’s lessons provide us with the first example in Matthew’s Gospel of opposition to Jesus, and the contrasting need to repent of our sin and come to Christ for forgiveness.

Scripture: Matthew 9:1-8

As we come to the first eight verses of Matthew 9 we have another story of an encounter of the Lord Jesus Christ with one of the people of his day.

As we come to the first eight verses of Matthew 9 we have another story of an encounter of the Lord Jesus Christ with one of the people of his day. In the context of the story it actually involves more than the one individual. It was something that took place in public. There was a large crowd around, and in the conversation that transpired Jesus dealt specifically not merely with this paralyzed man, but with the teachers of the law who were present.

Jesus and the Demoniacs, Day 5

Theme: The Need for Obedience

This week’s lessons show both the positive and negative changes that an encounter with Jesus can produce.

Scripture: Matthew 8:28-34

If we seem to prefer our own comfort to the spiritual condition of others, the Lord may do one of two things to correct us. First of all, sometimes it’s necessary for us to lose the pigs.

If we seem to prefer our own comfort to the spiritual condition of others, the Lord may do one of two things to correct us. First of all, sometimes it’s necessary for us to lose the pigs. That is to say, we have to enter on hard times and find that we can get along with a lot fewer things than we think we have to have in order to be happy. One of the problems with things is that they tend to ensnare us and trap our souls. And the more we have the more we’re ensnared like a spider spinning a web.

Jesus and the Demoniacs, Day 4

Theme: The People’s Response

This week’s lessons show both the positive and negative changes that an encounter with Jesus can produce.

Scripture: Matthew 8:28-34

Now the point I want to make is that it is necessary that the Lord Jesus Christ have authority in the most powerful sense if the demon is to be driven out. And if we’re to go and preach the gospel and have any hope of success, it must be by that power and authority of Jesus Christ as well.

Jesus and the Demoniacs, Day 3

Theme: Jesus’ Authority and Power

This week’s lessons show both the positive and negative changes that an encounter with Jesus can produce.

Scripture: Matthew 8:28-34

In my experience I have never known anybody whom I would say has been demon possessed, but I do believe it happens.

In my experience I have never known anybody whom I would say has been demon possessed, but I do believe it happens. But by way of application, I have known people who have been afflicted in a similar way, possessed by some bad spirit or sin, and so have come under all the various influences and experiences that these men had. One thing about demon possession is that those who are possessed are unable to break free. The evil spirit is stronger than they are.

Jesus and the Demoniacs, Day 2

Theme: An Analysis of the Two Demoniacs

This week’s lessons show both the positive and negative changes that an encounter with Jesus can produce.

Scripture: Matthew 8:28-34

Now, Acts 8 tells us of the healing of these two demon possessed men. It took place in the region of the Gadarenes. There’s some manuscript peculiarities where that’s concerned due to the fact that nobody is quite certain where this area was.

Now, Acts 8 tells us of the healing of these two demon possessed men. It took place in the region of the Gadarenes. There’s some manuscript peculiarities where that’s concerned due to the fact that nobody is quite certain where this area was. One thing that is certain is that it was a Gentile area, and it was probably on the northeastern side of the Sea of Galilee. Jesus had crossed over there, and as he did, out of the tombs came these two men who were demon possessed. We have to start with an analysis of them and we have to ask what they were like before this encounter with Jesus.

Biblia Germanica

A timely publication

The kind folks at Hendrickson Publishing sent each of us a copy of their handsome facsimile of the Biblia Germanica (the Luther Bible). It is a wonderful work especially given the coming recognition of the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation next year.

Jesus and the Demoniacs, Day 1

Theme: Two Responses to Christ

This week’s lessons show both the positive and negative changes that an encounter with Jesus can produce.

Scripture: Matthew 8:28-34

Last week, as we considered the story of Jesus and the centurion, I referred to the different kinds of knowledge, taken from J. I. Packer’s book, Knowing God.

There’s some stories in the Gospels that have a great introduction from the story that immediately proceeds them. One of them is this story we come to from Matthew 8, the story of the healing of two demon possessed men. Immediately before this we have the story of Jesus’ calming of the storm. The disciples were very much taken aback by this and amazed at the power of Jesus, and the story ends with their question: “What kind of a man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” Their question is actually answered by the demons who possessed the two men, when they asked Jesus, “What do you want with us, Son of God?”

Jesus and the Centurion, Scene 5

Theme: To All Who Will Come

In this week’s lessons on Jesus’ encounter with the Roman centurion, we see how the centurion was changed as he came to a saving knowledge of Christ.

Scripture: Matthew 8:5-13

Now, I’d like to apply this in a few ways. Jesus makes a contrast here between those who are not of Israel who will be present at the banquet and those who are of Israel but who will be excluded.

Now, I’d like to apply this in a few ways. Jesus makes a contrast here between those who are not of Israel who will be present at the banquet and those who are of Israel but who will be excluded. The first principle that comes from it is this: It is possible to have many spiritual advantages and yet not be saved.

Jesus and the Centurion, Scene 4

Theme: Jesus’ Authority and Compassion

In this week’s lessons on Jesus’ encounter with the Roman centurion, we see how the centurion was changed as he came to a saving knowledge of Christ.

Scripture: Matthew 8:5-13

Now on the other side of this encounter we have Jesus Christ. What do we say about him? Well, first of all, he was everything the centurion imagined he was and a great deal more besides.

Now on the other side of this encounter we have Jesus Christ. What do we say about him? Well, first of all, he was everything the centurion imagined he was and a great deal more besides. The centurion said to him, “You are able to speak the word, and if you speak it, it will be done because I understand authority. I speak with the authority of Rome, and you speak with the authority of God.” And of course that’s true. That is exactly the way Jesus spoke.

To My Sisters in Christ

Donald Trump is not "most men"

Over the weekend the world was given the distasteful surprise of the now infamous recording of Presidential nominee Donald Trump bragging in the crudest terms about his adulterous sexual conquests. He even bragged about his success in groping women. Later he explained it away as nothing more than “locker room talk.” By now we have come to expect this sort of disgraceful behavior from Mr. Trump.

However, what is even more disconcerting than Mr.
