The intellectual dimension involves understanding, and the same principles apply. If we are thinking humanly, there are differences of understanding between people. Some understand a good bit, others not so much. Some can even understand a good bit about theological subjects. There are unbelievers who write theological textbooks. Some of the great studies of the Old and New Testaments are by men who, I would say, are not true believers in Jesus Christ. They have understanding at the human level, but Paul is talking about the kind of understanding that allows us to see ourselves as we really are before God and which turns us to Christ. On that level we have no understanding at all unless God provides it.

When he says there is no one who understands, he is talking about the intellectual dimension of our being. When he says there is no one who seeks God, he is talking about the volitional dimension of our being. Together these mean that things are so desperate that our state is actually hopeless unless God intervenes to do what needs to be done.

Somewhere in my library I have a pamphlet by Donald Grey Barnhouse entitled How to Mark Your Bible. This pamphlet contains suggestions for using Bible markings as an aid to Bible study, and it contains sample pages from a Bible Barnhouse used and marked thoroughly. I think of this now because at Romans 3:21 and following, Barnhouse had written the picture of a heart in the margin of his Bible. That was to remind him, as he came to this passage, that Romans 3:21-27 is the heart of the Word of God.

Learning Repentance from the Psalmist

Psalm 51 is a psalm of repentance and one we can learn from and even use to model our own confessions. When we feel the pain of conviction, a crushing weight that feels like broken bones, we can run to our Father and cry out to him in repentance. And we can do so in complete confidence, knowing that our loving, merciful God forgives us through the cleansing and atoning blood of our Savior.

I broke my arm two years ago. It was the first broken bone of my life. I thought it would be fun to expose my kids to the joys of roller skating at the local roller rink. I wanted to share the fun of skating to sounds of the latest pop music, eating roller rink fare, and participating in in the Hokey Pokey. After all, that’s what I did most Saturday’s growing up. The only problem was that I hadn’t skated since I was a teen and falling down as an adult brings greater consequences than it did when I was a child.

In these lessons we see that our growth in holiness is dependent upon our being grounded in the Word of God, which points us to the Lord Jesus Christ as the only source of salvation and sanctification.

The last point I want to make is that the Word of God makes Christians strong, strong enough to resist the idols of their culture and go God’s way. I do not think we have a very strong church in the United States today.

When the Gallup Poll tells us that there are fifty million born-again people, that is a very impressive statistic. But it is much different from saying that the church of Jesus Christ is qualitatively strong.

Yesterday we looked at the first two things the Word of God provides.  Today we consider two more.
 
Third, the Bible is where we learn the will of God for our lives. We have many questions in this area. We say, “Here I am living in this particular time, in this particular place, with these particular talents. What am I to do? Which direction am I to go in? Am I to do this or that? Am I to move here or there?” We have no specific answers to these questions in the Word of God, but we do have great principles that will guide us in ninety-nine percent of the circumstances.

Will CBMW Refute EFS?

Error should be repented of not merely erased. 

 
On August 22 Christianity Today posted another article on the recent debate over the doctrine of the Trinity. I won’t rehash the details of the debate. However the author of the CT piece does get a few details wrong. Notably she repeats the line that the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood (CBMW) maintains a neutral position regarding ESS/EFS/ERAS (I am sure that is what she was told).
