Resist…Submit

It must be realized that Satan will bring up his heaviest reserves to resist the child of God at this point. If the enemy of our souls can keep us with unconfessed and unforsaken sin in our lives, then he has succeeded in nullifying our Christian life, making our Christian witness ineffective. If ever we wrestle against the principalities and against powers, if ever we have to do with the rulers of this world’s darkness, if ever we contend against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenlies, it is at the moment when we attempt to seek the Lord for forgiveness and cleansing.

Resist...Submit

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7)

Cheerful Givers -- Part Four

Cheerful Givers
2 Corinthians 9:6-15
Theme: Gratitude.
This week’s lessons teach us that we should give willingly, generously, and cheerfully.

Lesson

The third blessing Paul mentions in 2 Corinthians 9:8 has to do with the example of God in his giving and our motivation. The very fact that God multiplies back our gifts is to motivate us. We spoke about these three marks of giving - generous, willing, and cheerful. When you begin to think of that in terms of God, it obviously applies. We speak of generous giving, but God is generous - abundantly generous. We talk of willingness - God does not give reluctantly or under compulsion. We talk of cheerfulness - God gives cheerfully.

Lesson

Who is the miserable giver? It is the one who gives just a little, the smallest amount he can get away with, because he resents having to give even that. The generous giver taps into the characteristic of God so that something of the grace of God and the joy of God floods the soul. I never go around telling people how much they should give - though sometimes I come close.

Lesson

The second characteristic of Christian giving is willingness. "Every man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion." Some years ago, I was preaching from Genesis chapter 22, about the obedience of Abraham. One of my points was that the obedience of Abraham was a willing obedience. I recall asking the question at that point - the same kind of question we might ask here: "How would it be possible for Abraham to obey and not be willing, because the argument would go: if he was not willing, he would not obey; and if he obeyed, he must be willing.

Lesson

It is interesting how, in this great second letter of Paul's to the Corinthians, that he spends so much time on the subject of giving. This offering, which he was receiving from the Gentile churches and would eventually take to Jerusalem for the poor, was clearly very important to Paul. So, obviously, what the Corinthians did in this matter of giving would also be very important.

Partners in Ministry -- Part Five

2 Corinthians 8:16 - 9:5
Theme: Sharing.
This week’s lessons teach us the blessing of carrying each other’s burdens.

Lesson

What Paul is really talking about is the character of Christ. In the brothers was found the love of Jesus, the peace of Jesus, the joy of Jesus, the kindness of Jesus, and so on for all the other fruits of the Spirit. Now, that is what he says about these brothers, these three men whom he trusted with this commission involving this large sum of money from the churches at Corinth.

Lesson

Paul says in 2 Corinthians 9:4 that he is sending these brothers in order that their boasting about the Corinthians in this matter should not prove hollow, for if any Macedonians come with me and find you unprepared, I will be embarrassed and so will you. He is saying, "I am sending these men ahead to get everything ready because I have been boasting about you to the Macedonians. And if, when I come bringing the Macedonians with me, they should find you unprepared, I would be embarrassed." Now, if these men who went beforehand to make the preparation were Macedonians, the argument that Paul makes later would not make sense. So they cannot have been Macedonians, and therefore we have to rule that whole group out.

Lesson

It is significant that when Paul established leadership in the churches, he always established a plurality of ministry. The Church of Jesus Christ is not a democracy. It is not a monarchy either in the sense of one individual assuming the right of king and ruling. If anybody is king, it is Jesus. And under Jesus, there is this plurality of leadership, the eldership in the church. It is the way Paul established it and the way Jesus set the pattern. Titus is an example of that.

Lesson

It is worth pausing to think a little bit about these people who shared in the work with Paul. Titus had a long history with Paul. The first historical incident that we have is the one Paul tells us about in Galatians. Paul was in a great theological tussle in those days because there was a kind of Christian Judaism that was trying to force the Jewish law upon Gentiles.

Lesson

2 Corinthians falls into three sections. The middle section - chapters 8 and 9 - forms a whole section, because those two chapters deal with a collection that Paul was trying to receive from the church in Corinth. In addition to the church in Corinth, the collection involved the surrounding churches, as well as churches in Macedonia, Achaia, and other parts of the world that he had evangelized.
