Dying, We Live -- Part One

Dying, We Live
Romans 12:1-2
Theme: Sacrifice.
This week’s lessons remind us that the path to eternal life begins with the cross.

Lesson

I do not like the word "paradox" used in reference to Christian teachings, because to most people the word refers to something that is self-contradictory or false. Christianity is not false. But the dictionary also defines "paradox" as any statement that seems to be contradictory, yet may be true in fact, and in that sense there are paradoxes in Christianity. The most obvious is the doctrine of the Trinity. We speak of one God, but we also say that God exists in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. We know the doctrine of the Trinity is true because God has revealed it to be true, but we are foolish if we pretend we understand it or can explain it adequately.

Incarnation

With the passing days I find that I dislike any pictorial representation of our Lord Jesus. Especially do I abominate the pictures which show Him long faced and long bearded, with a faraway look in His eyes. It is too bad that we have become accustomed to thinking of the Lord as dressed in a long robe. In His day all men were so dressed, so that there was no difference in His dress from that of any other man. If we would truly think of Jesus as He was when He was on earth, imagine Him in a Sears Roebuck suit and a five-dollar hat, walking through Times Square, not attracting a second glance from anyone.

How Should We Then Live? - Part Five

How Should We Then Live?
Romans 12:1-2
Theme: Obedience.
In this week’s lessons Dr. Boice teaches us how to live godly lives in an ungodly world.

Lesson

As we plunge into the great forest of these remaining chapters we shall be looking very closely at the trees. But this week we have been doing something equally valuable. We have been looking at the forest, and the bottom line of our study is that truth is a whole. Since we are talking about God’s saving work for us, this means that everything God has done for us in salvation has bearing on everything we should do, in all of life. We must be different people because God has saved us from our sins.

Nativity

This is by far the best name for the day of joy which we celebrate as the birthday of our Lord. "The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father) full of grace and truth" (John 1:14). This is the nativity. That was the incomparable day. The people that had once walked in darkness (Isa. 9:2) were by now sitting in darkness (Matt. 4:16), but God sent the great light to illuminate the darkness of our hearts and to lift men from the abyss of eternal darkness. No human eye could pierce those shadows.

How Should We Then Live? - Part Four

Lesson

"Therefore" is a linking word, as I have said. We have looked back to what it refers to. Now we should look forward to see what the doctrinal material of chapters 1-11 connects with. I am handling it in seven sections. First of all, in Romans 12, verses 1 and 2, we see that just as God is the basis of reality so that everything flows from him and takes its form from him ("For from him and through him and to him are all things" [Rom. 11:36]), so also our relationship to God is the basis of all other relationships and our duty to him the basis of all other duties. Because this is so, Paul sets out the principles that should govern our relationship to God in verses 1 and 2. He reminds us that we are not our own and that we should therefore present ourselves to God as willing and living sacrifices.

Battered Pastors (2)

The call to be a pastor is one of unparalleled privilege. It is a joy, though a sobering one, to apostle paul.gifpreach God's Word for the benefit of God's people. For battered pastors, however, (and they are numerous) the glad labor of being a pastor has become detrimental to their well-being and that of their family.

Biography

The author of a biography begins at the birth and follows through to the death of his subject. But to understand any life story you must go back from the end to the beginning. What a man became is what makes his growth and development significant. If this is true of a man, how much more is it true of our Lord Jesus Christ, the God-Man.

His Trinity

The word Trinity is not found in the Bible, but the truth of this doctrine is in every part of the Book. Though Christians have been talking about and believing in the Trinity for two thousand years, there are many Christians who cannot name the persons in the Trinity correctly. As a result of this error certain cults have an easier time gaining a foothold in some minds which are not established in the truth.

How Should We Then Live? - Part Three

How Should We Then Live?
Romans 12:1-2
Theme: Obedience.

Lesson

In Monday’s study I commented on Francis Schaeffer’s book How Should We Then Live? saying that "then" is the all-important word. Now I note that when we come to the first verse of Romans 12 we discover exactly the same thing, only in this case the important word is "therefore." "Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices" is Paul’s counsel. Paul means, "In view of what I have just been writing, you must not live for yourselves but rather give yourselves wholly to God."

The Heart of Hypocrisy

The heart of hypocrisy is hypocrisy in the heart. If we want to deal with our hypocrisy, let us not simply look at the symptomatic behavior patterns of contradictory lives. Rather, let us strike at the root in the heart with God’s glorious Good News that He is better than what life can offer now and death can take later. And let us rest and rejoice in Jesus as our everlasting reward!

One of the most fascinating scenes in the earthly ministry of Jesus is found inbetween the events of Luke 11-12. If ever you want to see how unmoved Jesus is both by the criticisms and praises of men, Luke reveals it here. Jesus knew who he was, what he was sent to accomplish, and nothing was going to interfere with doing the will of His Father.
